Term Life Insurance

Coverage for the years your family depends on your income the most.

What it is

Term life pays a death benefit if you pass away during a chosen period — most often 10, 15, 20 or 30 years. It is the simplest form of life insurance there is.

Because it is pure protection with no cash value or investment piece, it is the least expensive way to buy a large amount of coverage while your family's obligations are at their highest.

What it does

  • Replaces your income during the years your household relies on it.
  • Pays off a mortgage or rent so your family is not forced to move.
  • Funds children's education or a spouse's transition years.
  • Pays the benefit to your beneficiaries as a lump sum, generally income-tax-free.
  • Some policies can later be converted to permanent coverage without new medical questions.

Who it fits

  • New or growing parents who need the most protection per dollar.
  • Homeowners carrying a mortgage they could not pay off alone.
  • Anyone who needs coverage for a defined window — until the children finish school, the mortgage is retired, or retirement income begins.

Things to weigh

  • Coverage ends when the term ends, and nothing is paid out if you outlive it.
  • Renewing after the term at an older age costs substantially more.
  • Level term keeps the same premium for the whole term; ask which policies are level.
  • Larger face amounts usually require a health exam and blood test.
  • There is no cash value to borrow against or withdraw.

Common questions

What happens if I outlive the policy?

Coverage simply ends and no benefit is paid. Some policies carry a conversion option to permanent coverage, and a return-of-premium version gives your premiums back at the end of the term.

Can I change the amount of coverage later?

The face amount on an existing policy stays fixed, but you can buy additional coverage or convert to a permanent policy. We review the amount with you as your family changes.

Is it hard to qualify?

Rates depend on age, tobacco use, health history and occupation. Many applicants qualify at preferred rates after a brief exam, and some policies are issued with no exam at all.

Not sure if term life is right for you?

A consultation takes about twenty minutes, costs nothing, and looks at your actual situation before anything is recommended.
